Squalane is a very common substance in skin care products that cannot be confused with Squalene. Unfortunately, it does get confusing and easy to misundertand.
Often referred as the moisturizer miracle, Squalane is one of the most famous and used moisturizer in skincare products. Indeed, its benefits are precious and numerous.
But let’s learn more about this ingredient first. Squalane is derived by hydrogenation from Squalene. Squalene can be found in our body in very small amount, which makes Squalane safe and non-irritant for our skin. It was traditionally processed from sharks’ livers, but this method disappeared: nowadays olive oil and sugarcane are the main sources of Squalene. Now, you may ask yourself why does it need to be hydrogenated and changed to Squalane if our body already possesses the original Squalene substance.
There are different types of oils, but the main two categories are saturated and nonsaturated oils.
Unsaturated oils are very unstable and are composed of a single or multiple double bonds within their fatty acid chains. This makes them very susceptible to free radical attacks and to easily go rancid when exposed to oxygen and heat. Unsaturated oils are definitely not wanted! Squalene is part of this category.
On the contrary, Saturated oils are very stable as they are composed of single bonds within their fatty acid chains. They are also very resistant to free radical attacks, which means they hardly get rancid and have a high melting point. This is what we want! Squalane is part of this second category! That’s why we need to transform its original form.
What does Squalane do for us in the end? Everything!
It is famous for being a good moisturizer and emollient. Squalane helps to keep your skin hydrated by holding moisture within your skin. Your skin will look softer, moisturized and refreshed. It doesn’t leave a greasy or sticky feeling on skin, which is perfect!
